Want to try fishing in Florida without buying a fishing license first? Florida offers several License-Free Fishing Days throughout the year when residents and visitors can fish without purchasing a recreational fishing license.
These days are designed to give people a chance to experience fishing and introduce new anglers to the sport. They’re a great excuse to take the kids fishing, bring along a friend who has never tried it or head out for a day on the water while skipping the usual license requirement.
And around Tallahassee, we have plenty of places to take advantage of it. Depending on where you want to go, you can try freshwater fishing at local lakes and rivers or make a day trip to the coast for saltwater fishing.
How Florida’s License-Free Fishing Days Work
During a designated license-free fishing day, Florida waives the recreational fishing license requirement. You can fish even if you don’t normally have a Florida fishing license.
However, license-free does not mean rule-free. All other fishing regulations still apply, including seasons, bag and size limits, gear restrictions and any rules for the particular body of water you’re fishing.
Some locations may also have separate entrance fees, permits or access requirements that aren’t waived simply because it’s a license-free fishing day.
Florida License-Free Freshwater Fishing Days
Florida’s freshwater license-free fishing days are held each year on:
- The first consecutive Saturday and Sunday in April
- The second consecutive Saturday and Sunday in June
These are the days to try fishing Florida’s lakes, ponds and rivers without purchasing the usual freshwater fishing license.
Florida License-Free Saltwater Fishing Days
Florida also offers several opportunities to try saltwater fishing without a recreational saltwater fishing license:
- The first consecutive Saturday and Sunday in June
- The first Saturday in September
- The Saturday following Thanksgiving
That gives North Florida residents several chances throughout the year to head toward the Gulf and try fishing from shore, a pier or out on the water.
Perfect for First-Time Anglers
If you’ve been thinking about taking the kids fishing but aren’t sure they’ll enjoy it, these weekends are a great time to try. You don’t have to purchase a license just to find out that somebody would rather feed the fish than catch them.
If you’re already an experienced angler with a license, use the weekend to introduce someone else to fishing. Bring an extra rod, pack some snacks and take a friend, neighbor or family member who hasn’t been fishing before.
What Should You Bring?
You don’t need a mountain of expensive gear for a casual day of fishing. For beginners, start with the basics:

- Hooks, weights and bobbers
- Appropriate bait or lures
- Small tackle box
- Needle-nose pliers
- Cooler and plenty of water
- Sunscreen and bug spray

And because this is North Florida, I’d add check the weather before you leave to that list. Summer thunderstorms and lightning can develop quickly, especially during the June license-free weekends.

One nice thing about Florida’s license-free fishing program is that most of the days follow the same calendar pattern each year. That makes it easy to plan ahead for April, June, September or Thanksgiving weekend.
