KIRK COLLECTION

A 300-piece collection of antique radios, record players and music boxes from the 1920s through the late 1960s. Accumulated over 60 years by Florida State University alumnus and retired radio broadcaster Jim Kirk. Housed in the WFSU Broadcast Center, the collection includes a 1950s RCA Nipper dog, 1933 Emerson Mickey Mouse radio and vintage Hopalong Cassidy items. Open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday-Saturday.

Pebble Hill Plantation

This 3,000-acre plantation and home boasts an eclectic collection of fine art, crystal, porcelain, and antique furnishings. Wander through the pine and magnolia-dotted grounds, which feature a dog kennel/hospital, cow barn, firehouse, historic cemetery, log cabin schoolhouse, and brick horse stables. It stands as testimony to the sporting life during the early 1800’s.

John G. Riley House and Museum

Built in 1890 by John G. Riley, local educator and civic leader, the home is the last visible evidence of Smokey Hollow, an African-American community that once thrived in downtown Tallahassee.  Exhibits feature historical artwork and photographs.  The museum was rated No. 8 on the Black Entertainment Television’s list of “Must See African American Places in the U.S.”

Bellevue Plantation at Tallahassee Museum

Catherine Murat, born a Virginian, moved to Florida with her parents where she met and married a Frenchman, Achille Murat. Related to George Washington by birth, she became a French princess by marriage. She lived at Bellevue from 1854 to 1867. In 1860, twenty-five enslaved descendants of Africans lived at Bellevue. They worked in the cotton fields, provided skilled labor, and tended to the cooking, among them members of the Hughes and Lee families. Union Bank Museum

Florida’s oldest surviving bank building that reopened after the Civil War as the Freedom Savings and Trust Company for emancipated slaves. It later served as a shoe factory, beauty shop, feed store and church. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it houses special exhibits from the Florida A&M University Black Archives.
